What Does It Mean to Be Truly Helpful?
“Being of True Service—a Direct Path to Awakening” Online Retreat—What Does It Mean to Be Truly Helpful?
As you give yourself over to the Spirit, you start to feel more and more clueless, carefree, and very cared for! Somehow you feel wrapped up and embraced by the Spirit without this feeling of having to direct the way and figure everything out. It’s actually quite delightful! You cannot burn out if you see that all true service is a service to your Self. Learn to listen and follow your inner Guide as He walks you through the day with loving gentleness.
Gold Nugget:
“I mean, those three vows that the monks and the nuns take are poverty, chastity, and obedience. Obedience is basically obedience to your intuitive Self, to your higher Self, to the Holy Spirit, to the way shower inside your mind, inside your heart. Is becoming obedient, like I will follow the direction of this higher wise being that’s within me that knows who I truly am. And to admit that I don’t know the way in order to be guided. In order to open up to guidance to show me the way, I have to first come to the humbleness to admit that my personal way has not worked! I’ve been trying to choose my way through time and space as a human being, and it has not brought me happiness. You know, it’s almost like in 12 Steps where you have to admit that you are powerless over your addictions. You have to almost, with A Course in Miracles, admit that you are powerless over the human condition that has been set up because nothing’s worked!
In fact, it has worked so horribly we could say that Jesus even has to be quite firm in the Course and Jesus has to say, ‘Resign now as your own teacher.’ T-12.V.8:3 He’s basically saying, I can guide you, but you’re gonna have to resign first! Because if I’m trying to guide you, and you’re trying to guide yourself, it’s gonna be a lot of struggle, a war going on in there. But if you resign as your own teacher, as you resign trying to think that you know enough from your own past learning to find your way out of time and space. If you still believe that you can do that based on everything that you’ve learned in the past, then you’re not going to be able to make that conversion into being of true service. And you will not know how to be truly helpful either because that past learning will be too much of an interference pattern. They will block the Holy Spirit’s guidance if you already have enough of an ‘I know’ mind that says, Thank you very much. You just give me some pep talks occasionally, but I’m in charge of my bank account. I’m in charge of who my relationships are. I’m in charge of my job. I’m in charge of where I live. I’m in charge of what I eat and what I put into this body. Okay, Jesus, you give me a good little pep talk every once in a while, but I’m running the show down here, and you can give me a pep talk every once in a while.
It is going nowhere! If you wonder why your Course in Miracles practice is going nowhere, is because you haven’t given it over yet! You haven’t said, Here, I give you the whole kit and caboodle! You take the bank account, you take the mortgage, you take the kids, you take the neighbors, you take my state of mind, take my car, take my skills, take my abilities, you take it all, and then you use it to help me unwind from my egoic perceptions of who I am and the world. Now that’s gonna work! If you do that, I swear, just by having the prayer of your heart of resigning now as your own teacher and say, ‘I would but follow, be You in charge.’ That’s how the Workbook ends: ‘Be You in charge. For I would follow You.’ W-365 I do not know the way. I do not know salvation’s ways, but you do. I will listen, I will follow, be You in charge. That is what accelerates spiritual awakening, and ultimately that right there is what triggers the opening to being of true service.”

I Taught the World to Teach Me
I Taught the World to Teach Me – In this session, David Hoffmeister emphasizes the importance of loyalty to the Spirit, the inner teacher, over personal desires and external opinions. This loyalty stems from truth and a deep connection with the Holy Spirit, not the ego’s demands. David shares parables of taking full responsibility for our state of mind by recognizing that we taught the world to teach us. By keeping this empowering thought in mind, it’s possible to remember that we don’t need to wait for externals to choose to be happy.

Coming Together with the Purpose of Healing
Coming Together with the Purpose of Healing – David Hoffmeister explores the perceptual problem, which pertains to the belief that the subject and the object are different, that the observer is different from the observed, and that the personality-self is different from the world that surrounds it. When we see an issue in the world, it really is just a split in the mind. This belief can result in significant problems such as conflict, climate change, and hunger, all of which can be traced back to the division within the mind. “Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved,” (W-79) and “Let me recognize my problems have been solved.” W-80 By examining the projected world, we often fail to identify the core problem because it manifests in many forms. You may resolve a few problems today, only to encounter more tomorrow. Therefore, the key lies in our perspective, which stems from our interpretation.

Relax, Step Back, and Unwind from the World
Relax, Step Back, and Unwind from the World – David Hoffmeister shares about the importance of placing the future in God’s hands, a concept that requires enormous trust. This trust is crucial as we have been conditioned to learn the past and plan the future. Trust is the foundation of a teacher of God and allows us to relax and feel divine ease. During this profound talk, David also gives an overview of the very first Strawberry Fields Festival in 2009. Jesus tells us to go from nightmares to waking with a transition between happy dreams and gentle waking. This process helps us feel softer and gentler, making the struggle and challenge easier. Enjoy this deep discussion with the participants that goes deep and yet fun.

Opening to Deeper Prayer
Opening to Deeper Prayer – David Hoffmeister begins this 4-day Japan retreat by exploring the concept of undoing the self-concept—a conditioned expectation that obstructs our understanding of the world. The ego arises from the mind’s pursuit of self-improvement, crafting illusory goals that keep the mind preoccupied and detached from its boundless nature. The ego’s game is endless, as it neither begins nor concludes. The purpose of our practice is to abandon the pursuit of temporal goals and relinquish the false identity—the mask of the ego. In doing so, we experience the mind’s all-encompassing nature, recognizing that the world, society, and everything once perceived as external are within the mind. As the mind reaches a state of rest, the external world reflects this peace, becoming more harmonious.

A Path of Gentle Letting Go
A Path of Gentle Letting Go – In this session, David Hoffmeister speaks about Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, focusing on self-actualization as the top goal. This concept is based on the Greek belief that ‘know thyself’ is the ultimate goal of human development. The ego attempts to deny this through hypnotism, mesmerism and imagination, covering the truth with unreal images. Atonement, the correction, is the awareness that the separation never happened.

Teaching the Holy Instant
Teaching the Holy Instant – At the beginning of this talk, David Hoffmeister discusses the concept of choice and the duality of life. We seem to live in a world of duality, where one of the primary goals is to find a life partner. We can see even that is dualistic because even a successful life match involves two, while reality involves only one.
