Different Spiritual Pathways, One Helpful Belief
Discernment with Non-dual Concepts—Different Spiritual Pathways, One Helpful Belief
David demonstrates and teaches on the idea that to the healed mind, everything in the world of form is the same. And all beliefs are the same in that they are equally meaningless, all except forgiveness. This is the one helpful belief! So to such a mind that has accepted forgiveness, it makes no difference who he is with; a lightness and joy is felt and extended to all.
Other topics in this talk include the bottom-up versus the top-down approach to awakening, talking about healing versus living the experience, and the difficulties that arise when judgments are projected and exceptions are made in regard to transferring the training. Enjoy!
Gold Nugget:
“The journey for me began when I started to ponder these questions: Why am I here? What is the meaning of life? What is the purpose for all of this? When I started to really give myself over to some of those deeper questions, instead of brushing them off and trying to say ‘Be practical, you have got to pay off your debts,’ I started to allow those questions to come into my awareness. That was probably around 1984, when I really started to allow those questions to be significantly in my awareness, to give my mind over to them. And A Course in Miracles came two years later as a reflection of that turn. I thought, there has to be a purpose to all of this, and I want to know the purpose.
When I was just in Greece, I kept talking about ancient Greeks sitting around in the bathtubs all day and pondering the nature of things. That was pretty wise. The Romans were next door with their buildings, architecture, conquests, etc., and the Greeks were more like, Before we get into all of that, let’s get clear about what’s the purpose of anything. So to me, that is where the ancient teachings come in. I identify with the Advaita Vedanta teachers who say, ‘There is no path.” I don’t see a pathway anymore. My mind can’t go to thinking in terms of pathways. It’s like it is all synthesized. I had this experience where I saw that all specific beliefs were equally the same. All specific beliefs around anything were absolutely the same. So therefore I turned into quite a good instrument for God in that sense. I turned into a spiritual chameleon, where I could be traveling around, and I have a great time with everybody.
Sometimes people have said, ‘Well, there are some major differences, David, that you have to acknowledge.’ And I say, ‘I don’t think so. I haven’t found any.’ They say, ‘Well, there is a difference between believers and non-believers.’ I say, ‘I can’t tell the difference anymore. What do you mean, a believer or a non-believer?’ I’m in joy. I don’t understand that. Or people may say, ‘There is a difference between a believer and an atheist.’ And I say, ‘I can’t tell the difference anymore.’ Everything is the same. It’s all the same love. It’s all the same joy. It’s all the same connection, and therefore the conversations are very lighthearted. I haven’t had a debate for many years. I haven’t had an argument for many, many years. I can’t even fathom what there is to argue about. Someone could tell me that this person is the devil, or this race needs to be wiped out, or these people are right and these people are wrong. I don’t get it any more. I don’t see that there are any specific beliefs that are any more or less real than the rest. And to me, that was from following the Course, which said that the only helpful belief in your mind is forgiveness. It’s still an illusion because in truth there is nothing to be forgiven, but it is the only helpful one. And I thought, Okay! I’m going for that one. I will take that one belief, but that one belief is like a blanket of peace over everyone and everything. Forgiveness doesn’t have an argument in it because it is all-encompassing peace. It sees that there is nothing to disagree about.”

I Taught the World to Teach Me
I Taught the World to Teach Me – In this session, David Hoffmeister emphasizes the importance of loyalty to the Spirit, the inner teacher, over personal desires and external opinions. This loyalty stems from truth and a deep connection with the Holy Spirit, not the ego’s demands. David shares parables of taking full responsibility for our state of mind by recognizing that we taught the world to teach us. By keeping this empowering thought in mind, it’s possible to remember that we don’t need to wait for externals to choose to be happy.

Coming Together with the Purpose of Healing
Coming Together with the Purpose of Healing – David Hoffmeister explores the perceptual problem, which pertains to the belief that the subject and the object are different, that the observer is different from the observed, and that the personality-self is different from the world that surrounds it. When we see an issue in the world, it really is just a split in the mind. This belief can result in significant problems such as conflict, climate change, and hunger, all of which can be traced back to the division within the mind. “Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved,” (W-79) and “Let me recognize my problems have been solved.” W-80 By examining the projected world, we often fail to identify the core problem because it manifests in many forms. You may resolve a few problems today, only to encounter more tomorrow. Therefore, the key lies in our perspective, which stems from our interpretation.

Relax, Step Back, and Unwind from the World
Relax, Step Back, and Unwind from the World – David Hoffmeister shares about the importance of placing the future in God’s hands, a concept that requires enormous trust. This trust is crucial as we have been conditioned to learn the past and plan the future. Trust is the foundation of a teacher of God and allows us to relax and feel divine ease. During this profound talk, David also gives an overview of the very first Strawberry Fields Festival in 2009. Jesus tells us to go from nightmares to waking with a transition between happy dreams and gentle waking. This process helps us feel softer and gentler, making the struggle and challenge easier. Enjoy this deep discussion with the participants that goes deep and yet fun.

Opening to Deeper Prayer
Opening to Deeper Prayer – David Hoffmeister begins this 4-day Japan retreat by exploring the concept of undoing the self-concept—a conditioned expectation that obstructs our understanding of the world. The ego arises from the mind’s pursuit of self-improvement, crafting illusory goals that keep the mind preoccupied and detached from its boundless nature. The ego’s game is endless, as it neither begins nor concludes. The purpose of our practice is to abandon the pursuit of temporal goals and relinquish the false identity—the mask of the ego. In doing so, we experience the mind’s all-encompassing nature, recognizing that the world, society, and everything once perceived as external are within the mind. As the mind reaches a state of rest, the external world reflects this peace, becoming more harmonious.

A Path of Gentle Letting Go
A Path of Gentle Letting Go – In this session, David Hoffmeister speaks about Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, focusing on self-actualization as the top goal. This concept is based on the Greek belief that ‘know thyself’ is the ultimate goal of human development. The ego attempts to deny this through hypnotism, mesmerism and imagination, covering the truth with unreal images. Atonement, the correction, is the awareness that the separation never happened.

Teaching the Holy Instant
Teaching the Holy Instant – At the beginning of this talk, David Hoffmeister discusses the concept of choice and the duality of life. We seem to live in a world of duality, where one of the primary goals is to find a life partner. We can see even that is dualistic because even a successful life match involves two, while reality involves only one.
