Body as the Means to Heal the Mind
Cape Town -Body as Means Not the End—Body as the Means to Heal the Mind
When the body is given much of the attention, the body becomes the end, and the mind is enslaved by the ego. The mind trains and works hard, getting more and more stressed, in order to benefit the body figure. When ambitions, goals, the future, and the body are all given back to the Spirit, the mind can breathe again, feel free and connected to the source. And the vitality and vibrancy of being used comes in.
Gold Nugget:
“It’s like if everything is backwards and upside down, reverse the feed. Flip the feed on the ego, say, ‘That’s enough of that. I just, I’m not fulfilled, following your plan of trying to make it in the world, and then grow old and get sick and die.’ When I was in university, I had all these people around me all the time. There were graduate assistants, friends of mine and everything. And they were starting to get concerned about me because my ambitions were leaving; I started to have not any ambitions, and in graduate school, that’s not a good thing. There was a lot of people around me, professors, friends, and then they started to ask me about my life. And I seemed to be questioning, questioning, questioning. ‘What’s it all about? Why put an effort in anything in the world? Where is it all heading? What’s to become of all this?’ I was asking all those questions, and they said, ‘That’s annoying. That’s very annoying. You should just get back and study your books, textbooks, and take your exams and do your papers, do your projects, get your grades, get your degree, and get on with it.’ And finally, the more they questioned me and were around me, they said, ‘Listen, we have to tell you this. David, you need to get a life. You need to get a life.’ And I said, ‘Okay.’ I said, ‘What does that mean? Get a life.’ And they said, ‘Get a life! You need to start earning money, spending money, go into debt like most everybody, and get a mortgage, and invest in the world and all these different things, and go deeply into debt and then spend the rest of your life trying to get out of debt, and achieve something, accomplish something, do something with your life, so on and so forth.’ And I said, ‘And then what?’ And then they said, ‘Then, you will, like the other trillions before you, will grow old, get sick, and die.’ I said, ‘That’s not good enough. That’s the package? Get a life, grow old, get sick and die, and that’s the package?’ I said, ‘Absolutely not! If that’s what you’re offering me, and you’re telling me to get a life, and that’s a life, absolutely not.’ I said, ‘I will never be content for that. I do believe there’s something more than that. If that’s a life, then I’m not in for that. I don’t know. I’m just gonna hold out and wait until something comes really clear for me.’ And for me, it came clear a couple years later when A Course in Miracles came into my life on the west coast of United States, in California. When I read the introduction, ‘Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God,’ (In-2:2-4) I thought, That sounds pretty good, actually. I don’t know fully what that means, ‘Nothing unreal exists.’ But I was already into eastern philosophy and maya and lot of the teachings of the Vedanta, so it did have a ground to land on. And I thought, Okay, then I’m going for joy. I’m going for happiness. I’m going for peace of mind, not the kind that’s dependent on the world working out a certain way.”

I Taught the World to Teach Me
I Taught the World to Teach Me – In this session, David Hoffmeister emphasizes the importance of loyalty to the Spirit, the inner teacher, over personal desires and external opinions. This loyalty stems from truth and a deep connection with the Holy Spirit, not the ego’s demands. David shares parables of taking full responsibility for our state of mind by recognizing that we taught the world to teach us. By keeping this empowering thought in mind, it’s possible to remember that we don’t need to wait for externals to choose to be happy.

Coming Together with the Purpose of Healing
Coming Together with the Purpose of Healing – David Hoffmeister explores the perceptual problem, which pertains to the belief that the subject and the object are different, that the observer is different from the observed, and that the personality-self is different from the world that surrounds it. When we see an issue in the world, it really is just a split in the mind. This belief can result in significant problems such as conflict, climate change, and hunger, all of which can be traced back to the division within the mind. “Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved,” (W-79) and “Let me recognize my problems have been solved.” W-80 By examining the projected world, we often fail to identify the core problem because it manifests in many forms. You may resolve a few problems today, only to encounter more tomorrow. Therefore, the key lies in our perspective, which stems from our interpretation.

Relax, Step Back, and Unwind from the World
Relax, Step Back, and Unwind from the World – David Hoffmeister shares about the importance of placing the future in God’s hands, a concept that requires enormous trust. This trust is crucial as we have been conditioned to learn the past and plan the future. Trust is the foundation of a teacher of God and allows us to relax and feel divine ease. During this profound talk, David also gives an overview of the very first Strawberry Fields Festival in 2009. Jesus tells us to go from nightmares to waking with a transition between happy dreams and gentle waking. This process helps us feel softer and gentler, making the struggle and challenge easier. Enjoy this deep discussion with the participants that goes deep and yet fun.

Opening to Deeper Prayer
Opening to Deeper Prayer – David Hoffmeister begins this 4-day Japan retreat by exploring the concept of undoing the self-concept—a conditioned expectation that obstructs our understanding of the world. The ego arises from the mind’s pursuit of self-improvement, crafting illusory goals that keep the mind preoccupied and detached from its boundless nature. The ego’s game is endless, as it neither begins nor concludes. The purpose of our practice is to abandon the pursuit of temporal goals and relinquish the false identity—the mask of the ego. In doing so, we experience the mind’s all-encompassing nature, recognizing that the world, society, and everything once perceived as external are within the mind. As the mind reaches a state of rest, the external world reflects this peace, becoming more harmonious.

A Path of Gentle Letting Go
A Path of Gentle Letting Go – In this session, David Hoffmeister speaks about Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, focusing on self-actualization as the top goal. This concept is based on the Greek belief that ‘know thyself’ is the ultimate goal of human development. The ego attempts to deny this through hypnotism, mesmerism and imagination, covering the truth with unreal images. Atonement, the correction, is the awareness that the separation never happened.

Teaching the Holy Instant
Teaching the Holy Instant – At the beginning of this talk, David Hoffmeister discusses the concept of choice and the duality of life. We seem to live in a world of duality, where one of the primary goals is to find a life partner. We can see even that is dualistic because even a successful life match involves two, while reality involves only one.
